Bushong's Garden

On January 7 (and 8th) we assembled the garden shed. Think of assembling your worst nightmare toy on Christmas morning then multiply that by 10. Dave Schneider, Todd Parker and Hugh Daschbach were there for the duration.

A group of Navigator dads led by David Schneider installed sprinkler lines and built planters on November 19. Thanks to Marsh Wilkinson, Ed Wilmes, and Dave Bent for putting in an invigorating day of labor:

Ensign Directory

The directory is a listing of students and faculty that Navigators produces every year and gives away free to every student. The information in the directory is provided by the District and verified against information provided by parents on the emergency cards. Parents can opt-out, that is, choose to not have their student listed by selecting a box on the emergency card, by indicating on the directory order form or by contacting one of the Navigators. We try to error on the side of caution and not list a student if we receive any of the  indications that the parents do not want their student listed.

As noted above, a directory is given away free to every student. Navigators would appreciate, however, if parents would choose to give us a $5 donation for the directory. Families can order additional copies of the directory for $5 per copy by filling out the form distributed with the first day materials. The same form can be used to opt-out or change the information provided on the emergency cards. If for some reason, you didn't receive the form, you can download a copy by clicking the following link:

Directory order form for parents

Navigators raises money for other projects by selling ads in the directory. If you have a business, placing an ad in the directory is a great way to show that your business supports our community and Ensign. We hear time and time again how often the directory is used by families so advertising in it is a great way to get noticed and earn the trust of parents. You can also buy space in the directory to run an inspirational message to show your support for a student and the school. Complete information, pricing and an order form is available on a document that can be downloaded by clicking the following link:

Lou Kirk and Daniel Barnes are leading the directory for 2006-2007. They could use more help in selling ads and checking the content for errors.

A separate email for directory ordering has been established at:

Newspaper Recycling

For several years, the Navigators have been operating a newspaper recycling program. Everyone is encouraged to drop off old newspapers in the bin on Irvine Avenue. Last year Navigators made $1500 from the recycling, money that is turned into projects for Ensign.

Every day, on a rotating basis, one of the Navigators transfers the newspapers into one of locked cabinets used by the recycler. Every day they also have to filter out the inappropriate items like trash that people leave in the bin. This year Todd Parker is leading the team who performs this chore. Volunteers to help with this task are always welcome.

Wood Shop

Last year one of the Navigators' priorities was to get the wood shop back in operation. We believe that wood shop is great way for kids to learn respect for working with their hands and skills beyond traditional book learning. Dr. Wong agreed and hired Mr. Kusik from Harbor to take over the Ensign wood shop. This year the Navigators are helping to fund the refurbishment of the wood shop with new tools to replace those that have grown old or gone missing. We will be soliciting corporate sponsors to help fund the shop on a permanent basis. Graham Tingler and Steve Hufford are leading that effort.

Ensign Fund Bricks

The Ensign Fund has an ongoing project called "Bricks for Bucks." Parents are encouraged to buy a brick that is inscribed with an inspirational message. These bricks are permanently installed along the walk leading to the Ensign office from Cliff drive. Navigators arranged for and helped out with the installation of these bricks.

Randy from Masonry Plus and his helper installed another group of bricks on November 18th:

Wood Shop Blower Cleanup

Navigators is investigating how we can clean and repaint the blower for the wood shop.

Long Jump Pit

The cover for the long jump pit has been completed and looks great!

The Ensign track team needed a sand pit to practice their long jumps so last year the Navigators pitched in, dug the pit and filled it with sand.
